According to, altitude sickness  has three forms: The common mild altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness (AMS), which is said to be quite similar to a hangover.
Headaches, nausea, and fatigue are common symptoms. warns that if you have AMS, you should take this as a warning sign that you are at risk of the serious forms of altitude sickness .

That backpacking trip my husband and I did to South America really tested our overall endurance.
We trained physically and mentally for a year (running, circuit training , weights you name it) knowing that we were going to do a lot of trekking and walking around.

I have been keeping tabs of our adventure s in a journal that I carry so I will be doing a bulk upload at some point.

So today, we’re off to Arequipa.

Our Cruz del Sur bus leaves early afternoon on a 15hr bus ride across the beautiful Andes

As we were doing research, we stumbled upon this Lonely Planet forum thread & article which really gave us the hibby-jibbys.
Stuff stolen.
As a ‘traveller’, I like to keep an open mind & not be swayed by such reports.
After all, how often does hijacking happen.
But having said that, I pray that everything goes well & that we are safe throughout our 3 month stint in this beautiful continent.
I hope these photos temporarily fill the void in my lack of posts.
